It was about wizards or spellcasters, and the specific book I am looking for featured a bunch of wizards doing battle with national guard troops. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I’m writing a book and I have orcs in it. Is this allowed? Do I need permission to use orcs or are they now a generic monster?…Everyone uses them. Warhammer, Warcraft, Elderscrolls, Shadowspawn, Heroscape, Might and Magic, Magic: The Gathering, Earthdawn and Shadowrun, Dungeons & Dragons….Stan Nicholls, Morgan Howell, Markus Heitz, Andrzej Sapkowski , R. A. Salvatore … the list goes on.
Did they get permission to use orcs?…No, my book is not like The Lord of the Rings. Everything is my own.

It will be fine, considering how many authors have used orcs before. Alghouth orcs in warhammer and LOTR are different so you may want to adjust your orcs to make it more original.
I remember using orcs when i was writing a story in grade 7 and the teacher said it was great and gorey. so orcs are widely known now.
